Understanding Best Putters & Approach Discs
Putters (speed 1-3) serve double duty in disc golf: putting at the basket from close range and throwing controlled approach shots from 100 to 200 feet. A good putting putter feels comfortable in your hand, flies straight, and inspires confidence when you're staring down a 25-footer to save par. Most players carry two to three putters — one dedicated putting putter in baseline plastic and one or two throwing putters in premium plastic.
Our Recommendations
For putting, the Innova Aviar, Discraft Luna, Dynamic Discs Judge, and MVP Atom are the most popular options. Pick the one that feels best in your hand — putting is deeply personal and comfort matters more than specs. For throwing putters and approach discs, look at overstable options like the Innova Zone (technically a mid but used as an approach disc by many), Kastaplast Berg (unique low-glide approach disc), or Axiom Envy (versatile throwing putter). Throwing putters in premium plastic survive impacts better than baseline plastic.
